The moments you spend with her matter: alcohol & pregnancy

The current National Health and Medical Research Council’s (NHMRC) Australian Guidelines to reduce health risks from drinking alcohol (the Alcohol Guidelines), advise that ‘women who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy should not drink alcohol’. This guideline underpins the National Awareness Campaign for Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Women (the Every Moment Matters Campaign).

This webinar will discuss:

– The current advice on alcohol and pregnancy based on NHMRC’s Alcohol Guidelines and the approach and impact of the campaign.

– The risks of alcohol consumption, including at low consumption levels, for women who are pregnant and may become pregnant.

– The impacts of FASD on individuals and families.

– The key role Obstetricians and Gynaecologists play in routinely asking, assessing, advising and supporting people who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy about alcohol.

Presenters

Sophie Harrington

Sophie is the Chief Operating Officer for the National Organisation for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (NOFASD Australia). Sophie has held positions in frontline services and senior management, across a range of sectors to include AOD, OOHC and justice, providing services to multiple young people and families impacted by FASD.

Sophie is a FASD educator and coordinator of NOFASD’s lived experience expert advisory groups. She is a member of the Steering Committees for the National FASD Awareness Campaign and the FASD Diagnostic Guideline Review, as well as the FASD Hub Advisory Committee and numerous additional FASD networks.

Sophie has lived experience of FASD.

Nicole Hewlett

Nicole is a proud Palawa woman and holds two positions at The University of Queensland, one in the First Nations Cancer & Research Wellbeing team and the other in the Child Health Research Centre.

Nicole is currently undertaking a PhD focusing on the development and implementation of Australia’s first FASD Indigenous Framework.
Previously, Nicole was a member of the NHMRC Alcohol Workshop group, appointed to update the NHMRC Australian Guidelines to reduce health risks from drinking alcohol.

Professor Elizabeth Elliott AM

Elizabeth is a distinguished Professor of Paediatrics and Child Health at the University of Sydney, Consultant Paediatrician at the Children’s Hospital Westmead, and Director of the Australian Paediatric Surveillance Unit.

Elizabeth is the Co-Chair of the National Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Advisory Group; Head of the NSW FASD Diagnostic Clinic; author of the Australian Guide to the Diagnosis of FASD; lead for the FASD Hub Australia and FASD Australian Register, and a member of significant national and international committees.

Dr Benjamin Bopp

Benjamin is �ᰮ������ President. He has been a specialist Obstetrician Gynaecologist for more than 20 years. He is currently the Director of Obstetrics at Gold Coast University Hospital. Previously, he worked as a generalist (obstetrics, gynaecology and IVF) in private practice.

In addition to previous involvement with the College Women’s Health Committee and Education Strategy Committee, Benjamin chairs the College’s Australian Workforce Working Group.

He has been a �ᰮ������ Board Director since 2016.

Dr Vijay Roach – Facilitator

Vijay is Chair of the Council of Presidents of Medical Colleges and a Visiting Medical Officer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in both public and private practice in Sydney.

Vijay is the Immediate Past President of �ᰮ������.
